The 2009 Angel Ball Gala was held on May 2, 2009 at the Winnipeg Convention Centre. The Jewish Foundation of Manitoba (JFM) was proud to be the recipient of the 2009 Misericordia Angel Award.
This marks the first time in the Jewish Foundation’s 45-year history that it has been recognized by an organization outside of the Jewish community.
The Jewish Foundation of Manitoba was recognized for its contribution to health care. Over the years the JFM has contributed $1,328,022 specifically to hospitals and health care institutions and $4,351,267 to social service/
"para-health" organizations.
The JFM made its first gift for health care in 1972 (to Mount Carmel Clinic) and its first gift to the Misericordia Hospital in 1985. Since 1985, the Foundation has distributed to Misericordia Hospital 21 out of the 23 years.
The Jewish Foundation has $65,000,000 in contributed capital and distributes approximately $3 million back into the community each year.
The Foundation uses a theme verse taken from the Talmud: "As my fathers planted for me before I was born, so do I plant for those who will come after me.” Winnipeg Jews have always benefitted from the city’s health care institutions and services. Most of the funds distributed to health care every year are allocations made by donors and many of these allocations are permanent. Therefore, Winnipeg’s Jewish community will always support our local healthcare institutions and services - today. tomorrow. forever.
