We Want To Have a Better World
Holocaust Education

The Jewish Foundation of Manitoba provided a special grant to Maple Leaf School for an art project based on the book, “Hannah’s Suitcase.” Each student chose the name of a child who died in the Holocaust and designed a

paper-mache suitcase for that child, filled with things that might have been important to that particular child.

Victor Kuzyk, principal of the North Kildonan school believes adding an extra component to the curriculum of his grade 6 students on Holocaust education, has truly impacted his students. "The kids showed great interest and enthusiasm towards learning about the Holocaust," says Kuzyk. "We wanted the students to have an opportunity to learn about the consequences of prejudice and war."

Tamara Weller, the art instructor for the project enjoyed working with the students. "I received such a great response from the kids," says Weller. "The students were very much engaged and passionate about their projects, and eager to learn as much as they could about the Holocaust."

"This project is one that will stay with the students for a lifetime," says Kuzyk."We couldn't have accomplished this vision without the generous support of the Jewish Foundation of Manitoba."

The next Special Grant application deadline is March 15, 2010. To apply for a Special Grant, click here.
