2012 GRANT RECIPIENTS


The Jewish Foundation of Manitoba approved the following grants:

  • ALPHA HOUSE
    To fund the replacement of two old computers that have limited capabilites.

  • ART CITY
    To fund an entire month of whimsical and funny monster
    movie-themed art workshops, culminating in a celebration of creativity and community that will engage inner-city youth.

  • ASPER JEWISH COMMUNITY CAMPUS
    To fund the upgrade of the phone network to a new state of the art system that will allow for growth and flexibility.

  • CAMP MASSAD
    To fund the purchase of a ramp to be added to the Oolam (the main programming building) and for the purchase of a defibrillator in order to respond to health emergencies.

  • CHABAD LUBAVITCH OF WINNIPEG
    To fund the installation of a video security system, which would allow the Centre to monitor the parking lot and entrances of the building to ensure the safety and security of staff and patrons.

    To fund the installation of a security gate at the front entrance of the parking lot, a fence along the edge of the property and privacy fencing for the mikvah (ritual bath).

  • CHAI FOLK ENSEMBLE
    To fund the purchase of a professional company to shoot new footage and create a three to four minute promotional video with current performers and music.

  • GRAY ACADEMY OF JEWISH EDUCATION
    To fund the creation of a secure website that addresses changing online needs and behaviours and encourages a collaborative and fully-informed community of users.

  • GWEN SECTER CREATIVE LIVING CENTRE
    To fund a video that will be produced that will be used for promotional and educational purposes for its 25th Anniversary.

  • JEWISH CHILD AND FAMILY SERVICE
    To fund the development of a two day conference on topics relating to addiction recovery from a Jewish perspective.

  • KAUFMAN SILVERBERG RESOURCE CENTRE
    To fund the purchase of books, magazines and other resources to provide an interesting, stimulating & current collection of materials.

    To fund the purchase of DVDs which would include material containing Jewish content.

  • MANITOBA THEATRE FOR YOUNG PEOPLE
    To fund "Tough Case" a new Canadian play for teenagers that demonstrates restorative justice through an exciting and challenging drama. Its primary function is to teach empathy for victims and encourage an examination of our justice system, crime and incarceration.

  • RADY JEWISH COMMUNITY CENTRE
    To fund a project that will provide families on the daycare's waiting list an opportunity to connect to Jewish life through specially designed programs.

    To fund the construction of direct access to the washrooms from within the pre-school children's room.

    To fund the replacement of its old inflatable bouncers that are used for Family Fun Zone, a meeting place for many Jewish families on Sunday mornings.

  • SHALOM RESIDENCES
    To fund the replacement of the flooring at their McAdam home to improve accessibity.

  • SILOAM MISSION
    To fund the purchase of new tables and chairs for the drop-in centre; a space for daily meals, conversations, community education, and special events.

  • UNIVERSITY OF MANITOBA
    To assist in offsetting the costs of travel and living in Israel for students from the University who participate in the Archaeological Field School course at Tell es-Safi/Gath.

  • WINNIPEG CHILDREN'S ACCESS AGENCY
    To fund the purchase and installation of cubbies (cubicles) to store belongings for the children attending the Centre.

  • WINNIPEG HARVEST
    To fund the purchase of Payless Shoes gift cards which will be used for the More Than Shoes program which provides boots and shoes to needy children.

  • WINNIPEG JEWISH THEATRE
    To fund the world premiere of Jewish playwright Alix Sobler's newest play. This bold production imagines that Anne Frank has survived the war and is now a 25 year old living in New York City attempting to get her diary published.

2012 SPECIAL GRANT RECIPIENTS

  • MICHAEL ESKIN

    To support the production an album from an original recording of a 1985 concert of nine Winnipeg cantors. This project is a joint effort by Michael Eskin and Kinzey Posen.

  • LEIGH-ANNE KEHLER
    To support a full length play written for one actor. The character, Maria, is the youngest child in a German family during World War II. The family is hiding a Jewish father and daughter in a small room underneath the floor boards of their old farmhouse.

  • AMY MANUSOW
    To support the creation of a 60-minute documentary film chronicling Maccabiah, an extraordinary competition at Camp Massad, by two Camp Massad alumni, Amy Manusow and Shauna Calnitsky.

  • LASHA MOWCHUN
    To support the production of a short film that will use cinematography and recorded sound to reenact the life of the applicant's Jewish family, as told through the warped perspective of her Uncle during his first schizophrenic breakdown.

  • ZANE ZALIS
    To support the creation of a professional video using music excerpts from the 2009 world premiere recording of "I Believe - A Holocaust Oratorio", with the addition of interviews and various media resources. This video will be presented on the internet, available to schools and other institutions of learning.

2012 WOMEN'S ENDOWMENT FUND
GRANT RECIPIENTS


The Jewish Foundation of Manitoba approved the following
Women's Endowment Fund grants:

  • B'NAI BRITH JEWISH COMMUNITY CAMP
    To fund a request to enable 30 new female participants, primarily from low income and single parent households, to attend the camp.
  • IMMIGRANT AND REFUGEE COMMUNITY
    ORGANIZATION OF MANITOBA (IRCOM)

    To support a program that aims to empower low-income, newcomer women living in downtown Winnipeg by providing them with meaningful employment opportunities in the child care sector, while simultaneously meeting the urgent need for more child care spaces in Winnipeg.


  • MENTORING ARTISTS FOR WOMEN'S ART (MAWA)
    To support a lecture by Amy Karlinsky, that will explore the importance of art in the lives of individuals and communities and will illustrate the work of over 100 female visual artists.

ENDOWMENT BOOK OF LIFE


The Endowment Book of Life program at the Jewish Foundation of Manitoba is a planned giving program that offers participants an opportunity to leave both a financial legacy and a historical legacy to the community. Donors make a promise to leave a bequest to the Jewish Foundation of Manitoba and have their family stories inscribed in the Endowment Book of Life.

BAR AND BAT MITZVAH FUND-HOLDERS


More than 200 Bar and Bat Mitzvah Funds have been established at the Jewish Foundation of Manitoba. These funds, opened with an initial gift of $100, are designed to introduce youth to philanthropic giving and provide them with the opportunity to support community organizations and charities of their choosing.
